Default Blue vs Purple vs Gold

I am just curious why the color of an item makes so much of a difference. With the new system introduced with nightfall, why does it still matter? Gold items with crappy inscription and mods are selling for 100k +x ecto, while an identical skin purple item with max inscription and mods is selling for 30 - 40k. Inscriptions / mods aside, are they not the same? Why does it matter?

well, purples tend to be high req and often not max damage. but you're right a req 9 purple and a req 9 gold, both identicle, the purple will be worth much less.

It's simply because people are vain. No different than two identicle pair of pants, one selling at walmart, the other at the gap... which do you think will cost more?

It's purely cosmetic. Some people feel good because they know that their weapon is as good, rare, and expensive as it can possibly get. Nothing wrong with it, it's just a matter of taste. It's not like there's a lot of things to spend money on in GW other than eye candy.

Gold is rarer.

Hence, higher vanity value. And since it's all about vanity anyway, gold sells.

Stats have always been essentially the same for purple and gold items.

But if you're dishing out over 30k for a weapon, you'll want the best.

I have a purple req 9 fellblade, inscribable.

How, aside from the color of the weapon's text, is it any different than my gold req 9 fellblade?

Nope, the only difference is it's percieved value and the fact you can't brag that it's gold

Also for some reason the old non-inscribable versions of weapons are worth more, which is probably related to the rarity aswell.

There are some weapons (mostly daggers, I believe) that have different skins based on their color. I'm not sure how many kinds do this, but I know that Elonian Daggers have 3 different skins (one for white/blue, one for purple, and one for gold...purple is more detailed than white/blue and gold is more detailed than all the others).

Aside from this one thing, there is no difference between purple and gold (or even blue) if the functionality is the same, which is why I look at blue/purple items first, since I know I can pay less for them.

Maybe people think gold is a prettier colour. ^^

(Though I'm a fan of the vanity explanation.)

its kinda like movies that have run out of and kind of purpose to exist and looking for any bit of creativity to be shat into existance for the reason of attracting attention. i think guru is at the point of being able to be read with nothing new to learn other than whats sticky and the new stuff that comes out on this site is just copy and pasting from guildwars.com and the rest is complaining or pointless common sense. sry i just see what i see

Colour of text and better chance at native mods being better (ie - you'll only see 15% - * on gold weapons aside from a few exceptions like the IDS, purple only goes as high as 14%). But with Elonian weapons, colour of text, since inscriptions mean you can make even a blue have a max native mod..

So if purple items have a lower chance to be perfect reqs, mods ect....A perfect low req purple is actually more rare than identical weapon in gold.

That means all the vain people have been wrong this entire time.

I have a fire staff that I'd kill for. (Well, technically I did kill for it.) I made it from a collector's staff WAY back in Prophecies when I just started playing. Anyway, this staff was 20/20 fire magic recharge and cast. I spent 2 hours killing ice imps for Frigid Hearts just to get it. Then a year later, I added a +5 insightful staff head and a 20% enchanting wrapping. Some one asked why I used this staff over Rago's. Maybe because the staves do exactly the same thing and I MADE it? Yeah, I always make my own weapons to perfection. Cheap, easy and does exactly the same thing as its gold counterpart. Let people spend over 200k on weapons, for I will spend 2k making mine.

I like gold colour more. Of course, skin takes precedence and if I have a purple item with a skin I like, I'll use that over a gold with a skin I don't like.

Also, I don't care about req where it's irrelevant (unlike most people who like golds). Meaning I'll use my req 13 platinum blade and sell a req 8, because you're retarded if you're running less than 15 mastery anyway, but I'll try to get a req 8 strength shield, since that gives me a small edge over PvP shields which are req 9.

One's from Walmart and the other one's from GAP, apparently.
